Leading Mental Health Outpatient Treatment Programs in Cincinnati, Ohio

At Glenwood Behavioral Health Hospital, we’re dedicated to providing comprehensive mental health and addiction care for residents of Ohio (greater Cincinnati area) as well as Indiana and Kentucky. We’re pleased to offer a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adolescents ages 13-17 and adults age 18 and older. Our goal is to equip each patient with the tools they need to succeed and thrive.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

Commonly referred to as a day program, a PHP usually takes place during the morning and afternoon hours, allowing patients to return home in the evenings. This schedule makes it possible for patients to receive professional support while still maintaining a sense of normalcy in their personal lives. This balance between structured therapy and familiar comforts can help patients feel more grounded, reassured, and motivated throughout their healing journey. Eligibility for a PHP is determined based on the nature and severity of symptoms. Patients should not be in a state of crisis or pose a safety threat to themselves or others. A partial hospitalization program is ideal for patients who need intensive care but do not require round-the-clock supervision.

Adolescent PHP

Young people ages 13-17 can enter our adolescent PHP directly, or they can transition from another level of care. In this program, we address many conditions, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Depression
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Substance use disorders
  • Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)

Our adolescent PHP features medication management services, family therapy, and group therapy. The specific topics covered in group sessions will depend on the type of group as well as the patients who are in the group. For example, social anxiety concerns may be particularly relevant for someone who is suffering from anxiety, and trauma could be especially helpful for someone who is diagnosed with PTSD. Groups are conducted by therapists or nurses and occur Monday-Friday for four hours each day.

During this four-to-six-week program, adolescents take part in at least one family therapy session, with additional sessions scheduled as needed.

Adult PHP

Our adult PHP is also available through direct admission or as a step-up (from traditional outpatient therapy) or step-down (from inpatient or residential) program. We support adults age 18 and older who are struggling with anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, depression, PTSD, and addictions.

Like our adolescent PHP, the adult PHP includes weekly medication management, at least one family therapy session, and four hours of daily group therapy.

The length of stay for our adult PHP is around two to three weeks, offering dedicated time and space for adults to work toward healing, resilience, and long-term wellness.

What To Expect in Our Cincinnati PHP

Process, psychoeducational, and skills-based groups form the foundation of our PHP. In groups, we utilize various therapeutic modalities, such as:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): Helps individuals identify and challenge negative thoughts
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): Fosters calmness, mindfulness, and adaptability
  • Motivational interviewing: Assists patients in exploring and resolving ambivalence to change
  • Narrative therapy: Empowers individuals to reframe their internal narrative, transforming self-doubt into self-belief
  • Interpersonal therapy (IPT): Aims to improve interpersonal relationships and social health
  • Person-centered therapy: Places patients at the center of the therapeutic session, helping them recognize and leverage their strengths to reach their goals
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): Encourages individuals to accept difficult emotions and take actions that align with their values

Each modality is carefully selected based on the patient’s diagnosis, the intensity of their symptoms, and other personal factors. CBT and motivational interviewing, for example, might be part of a care plan for addiction because they target the brain and behavior patterns, which are both influenced by substance use.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An intensive outpatient program is a lower level of care than partial hospitalization, offering additional flexibility in scheduling. Patients usually attend sessions for a few hours on select days, giving them more time to pursue other activities. An IOP can be a practical solution for patients who have school, work, or family obligations. To be eligible for an intensive outpatient program, patients should be stable, ready to actively engage in therapy, and capable of functioning independently. Additionally, having a reliable support network is important for helping patients overcome obstacles they might face outside of programming.

Adolescent IOP

The adolescent IOP at Glenwood takes place three days a week during after-school hours (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4-7 p.m.). Patients can participate in person or via telehealth, depending on their location and transportation situation. To best support our patients, we also offer a hybrid model of care. During a young person’s time in our adolescent IOP, which is about four to six weeks, they can receive age-appropriate services that are tailored to their unique needs.

Concerns we address in this program include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, suicidal ideation without intent, and self-harm. We provide everyone with a thorough assessment before they enter our program, which helps our staff create a personalized plan for each adolescent’s care.

The focus of our programming is group therapy, including both process and psychoeducational sessions. Licensed therapists or counselors lead groups, encouraging open dialogue among peers and teaching adolescents how to:

  • Cope with stress and overwhelming emotions
  • Set and maintain healthy boundaries
  • Build a positive relationship with self and others

We incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy to help adolescents understand the link between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. With this awareness, young people can find new, constructive ways to handle difficult situations and apply these strategies to their daily lives.

Adult IOP

Our adult intensive outpatient program caters to adults age 18 and older of all genders. We provide care for people who are dealing with a variety of mental health and substance use concerns, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Stress-related concerns
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder
  • Personality disorders
  • Drug addiction
  • Alcohol addiction

Adults typically participate in our IOP for three to six weeks, engaging in three groups a day, three days a week. Qualified social workers facilitate process and psychoeducational groups, covering a wide range of topics. Group therapy allows patients to connect with and learn from others who are facing similar struggles. In this collaborative environment, patients can develop strategies for recovery and mental well-being. CBT is key to this process, promoting mindset and behavior change.

What To Expect in Our Cincinnati IOP

Each patient’s individualized care plan outlines the services they can expect to receive while in the IOP at our Cincinnati, Ohio, behavioral health hospital.

Medication management is available for patients who have been prescribed medications to alleviate their symptoms. Patients can meet with psychiatrists as necessary, and a member of our medical staff is on hand to administer the medications and monitor their effectiveness.

In addition to group therapy, the main method of care in our IOP, we offer individual and family therapies. Individual therapy gives patients the chance to meet one-on-one with a therapist or social worker in a confidential setting. This can be an excellent time to process experiences, discuss sensitive topics, refine coping skills, and reflect on personal progress. Patients participate in individual therapy on an as-needed basis.

Family therapy sessions may be scheduled with patients and various members of their support system when appropriate. These sessions are designed to strengthen family dynamics, clarify the role of each member in the healing process, and promote honest, empathetic communication.
