Leading Mental Health Adult Outpatient Treatment Programs in Cincinnati, Ohio

At Glenwood Behavioral Health Hospital, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, we recognize that everyone’s experiences are different and that everyone deserves to get treatment that is truly catered to their unique needs. For this reason, we provide comprehensive services at various levels of care so that we can meet everyone where they are on their healing journey.

We are pleased to offer an adult-only intensive outpatient program (IOP) for people age 18 and older who need care for mental health and addiction concerns. Our adult IOP is a stand-alone program that is provided in a structured outpatient setting.

What is Intensive Outpatient Programming?

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) can be ideal for people who do not need the round-the-clock care offered in an inpatient or residential setting but need a higher level of care than what is offered in once-weekly therapy. This structured setting allows patients to receive the care they need while still being able to live at home, attend work, and take care of their families and other daily responsibilities.

Generally, patients stay in our adult IOP for three to six weeks. However, the actual length of time they spend in the program may vary based on their needs and the progress they make while participating in programming.

Who We Treat

Our adult intensive outpatient program is available for adults of all genders age 18 and older. We provide care for people who are struggling with a variety of mental health and addiction concerns, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Stress-related concerns
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Other trauma-related concerns
  • Personality disorders
  • Drug addiction
  • Alcohol addiction

Before a person is admitted into our adult IOP, they will work with one of our team members to complete a thorough assessment. During this assessment, adults may be asked questions about a number of different things, including their medical history, the symptoms they are experiencing, whether or not they have received any kind of mental health or addiction treatment before, what their social interactions are like, if they are experiencing any difficulties with loved ones, and if they are struggling to perform at work or in any other activities.

By providing our team with this information, we can determine the level of care that may be most appropriate for them. If a patient does not need inpatient, residential, or partial hospitalization services, we may recommend that they participate in our adult IOP.

What To Expect in Our Cincinnati Adult IOP

In order to provide patients in our adult IOP with truly comprehensive care, we offer a number of different types of therapies and services. All patients receive individualized treatment plans that are created based on their specific needs and goals. This plan will outline the services they can expect to receive while in the adult intensive outpatient program at our Ohio behavioral health hospital.

Medication management services are available in our adult IOP for patients who may be taking medication as part of their overall care plan. Patients can meet with psychiatrists biweekly (at a minimum), and they may have additional meetings on an as-needed basis. Nurses are on hand to administer the medications and monitor their effectiveness.

Individual therapy offers time for patients in our adult IOP to meet one-on-one with a therapist or social worker in a confidential setting. This can be an excellent time for them to process through their experiences, discuss things that they may not feel comfortable talking about in a group setting, develop and practice coping skills, and track the progress they are making in the program. Individual therapy sessions are offered as needed or when requested.

Family therapy sessions may be scheduled with patients and various members of their support system if the patient’s treatment team recommends it. If family therapy is included in a patient’s overall care plan in our adult IOP, they can meet with their families and a therapist or social worker biweekly or on an as-needed basis. The goals of family therapy can include exploring the family dynamics and the patient’s role in the family, establishing positive interaction between family members, ensuring appropriate involvement of the family in the patient’s therapeutic process and discharge planning, and clarifying the functional nature of the patient’s symptoms with respect to their family system. It can also be a time to discuss healthy boundaries, conflict resolution, and ways that the family can support each other throughout the patient’s healing journey.

Group therapy is the primary method of care that we use in our adult IOP. Group therapy sessions take place three times a day, three days a week. We offer cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) groups, educational groups, and process groups. In group therapy sessions, which are led by experienced social workers, patients may discuss a variety of topics, including coping skills, healthy relationships, trauma, social anxiety concerns, and problem-solving. The topics will depend on the type of group as well as the patients who are in the group. Group therapy is beneficial not only in terms of the conversations and processing opportunities it provides but also because it allows patients to come together with other people who may be experiencing similar challenges. They can receive support from their peers while also offering support to others. This can be extremely beneficial to a person’s healing process.

Whatever a patient’s needs are, we aim to provide services that will help them be successful on their path to healing.
